EMDR THERAPY AND INTENSIVES

Healing your deepest wounds.

“Trauma is not what happened to us, but what we hold inside in the absence of an empathetic witness.” - Peter Levine

Trauma is the lasting internal struggle that remains after the traumatic events occur. Trauma shows up differently in different situations, but one common theme is that it changes what we believe about ourselves. EMDR therapy allows you to reprocess memories in a way that aims to eliminate negative self-beliefs and integrate positive ones. What we believe to be true about ourselves has immense power over our lives and our wellbeing.

Have you experienced the following:

  • Unwelcome triggers that relate to your past experiences

  • Feeling “stuck” and unable to move forward

  • Hypervigilance, nightmares, and fears that relate to your past experiences

  • Difficulty maintaining healthy relationships

  • Difficulty concentrating and constant overthinking

EMDR Intensives

EMDR Intensives can be helpful for those who want to do longer sessions less often. They are also great for those with limited schedules and those who need to travel in order to do the processing sessions. With intensives, we schedule an extended session of 4 to 5 hours, usually on a Friday or Saturday.

Trauma can be very disruptive and, at times, even debilitating. It can be isolating, as well, since many people hold their trauma alone, feeling like no one can really understand what happened to them. Sometimes, traumatic experiences are dismissed or downplayed by people in your life. Shame and embarrassment may keep you from opening up about things that happened to you in the past. Maybe you tell yourself “I should just let go of the past” or feel that there is something wrong with you because you can’t. Your trauma may need an empathetic witness. Seeking help for trauma does not mean that you are weak or helpless. It means that you are empowering yourself to take control of your future.

Traumatic memories often get “frozen in time” in our brains and our bodies. EMDR helps to unlock these memories and process them in a way that “updates” them into our current maturity and understanding. By reprocessing the memory and targeting the negative self-beliefs that formed in response to the trauma, we heal the trauma response. With effective EMDR treatment, the memories may remain, but they will no longer hold the same emotional charge.

Common questions about EMDR therapy

  • There is no one answer to this question, as everyone’s trauma history is different. However, EMDR is shown to bring trauma healing more quickly than other types of traditional therapy.

We do offer intensives in appropriate situations for those who would like to work through the process more quickly.

  • One nice thing about EMDR is that your brain is able to process the traumatic memories without the need for you to share extensively with the therapist. This is a benefit for people who do not want to talk in depth about what happened.

  • EMDR can certainly help with complex trauma. The treatment will take longer than with single event trauma. But it has the potential to bring immense healing to those with complex trauma, as well.
